It’s that time of year for resolutions and what not. I’ve already laid the ground work for some of mine, and I’m excited to move forward. There’s going to be some apparel stuff, a ton of photography, and something with a lot of layout involved (semi-secret project). I’ll post about everything as it’s completed, so grab that rss feed or add me as a friend on twitter
To start off I’m going to have a new desktop wallpaper set up for every month. If you check out the downloads section you’ll see I’ve already posted January’s. If ya like it or hate it let me know in the comments.
The desktops won’t always be designed by me, I’ll be working with some designers and photographers. By the end of the year we should have an amazing pictorial calendar, with some great eclectic work.
Small update of photography. Unfortunately it’s not posted here, you’ll have to head on over to my Flickr page.
The new pics are of Amanda, who’s just starting out as a model. We had a fun shoot in the studio, then did a few out in the abandoned parking lot next door. My fav shot is the one here in the post, it’s quite the gaze.
Also check out the new pictures of Shay. We set up a rock themed shoot… and Shay put in the energy. She’s awesome to work with, if you do any kind of fashion photography in Utah you’ll see her, and I hope these shots can show you a little of why.
FDFF is a Rock/Indie/Progressive band out of SLC. They’re gaining traction on the local scene here, as well as getting noticed by several record labels. I put together this gig flyer for them using photography from Matthew Thain, my friend and partner at Mint Photography
Also There are some updates in the Design section… Identity and Print are all current.
If you follow my twitter feed you’ll have noticed that I’ve been tweeting about some of my design inspirations. This is something that I plan on doing on a regular basis, it’s kind of my “Best Of On The Go” filtered from all around the web. At the end of the week (Friday morning) I’ll post an inspiration compilation with a bit more from me on why I enjoy the linked content. In addition, if you’d like to see all my favorite links check out my del.icio.us feed.
Hydro Seventy Four: This guy is amazing. I’ve been following his work for a while now, but hadn’t stopped by for a while. So I dropped in this week and was again blown away by the quality and quantity of work. Go look through his illustrations… it’s all very inspiring, I really can’t say enough about it so here’s their brief bio.
Hydro74 was birthed from the designs of Joshua M. Smith back in 1994. At the time the name wasn’t realized however the beginning was much the same. During college while invest far too much time in the computer lab learning software, rather than seeking a social life, a passion was sparked between man and machine. In the early part of 2000 while working on a project for Endeavor Snowboards, everything began to click and a voice was found within illustration. Between working full time for a small Skateboard company and trying to aquire freelance work many hours were lost to be able to understand fully where Joshua wanted to go, design style wise.
Hydro74 has grown to meet the challenges faced by working with the style demands of the market. In turn, Hydro74 has helped revolutionize some forward thinking in the market and help establish trends.
Faveup is described as “Design Inspiration Gallery.” It’s all user submitted stuff, but everything is gone through and moderated by designers so only the best (subjectively) content shows up. There’s 4 catagories: Logos, Business Cards, Flash Websites, and CSS Websites. The moderation is generally really good in my opinion. There’s access to all the archives, which is nice because it’s been around long enough that you don’t run out of things to look at.
LogoPond.com The name pretty much says it all… it’s all about logos. Tons and tons of logos to look at through galleries, user profiles, showcases, etc. There’s also an active forum where you can get reviews, give comments, general design stuff, an all around descent community.
I’ve known about this site Kuler for a while, but I’d never got around to using it until a couple days ago. Ah, the site is amazing for picking colors. Very simple interface, tons of information on color theory, a community of educated designers and access to their generated swatches. I’ve always liked picking colors for things, but the approach I took on this site was way different for me… I really liked all the user created swatches. Something about seeing the color of a potential project through someone else’s eyes is very inspiring. I’d recommend this site to anyone who has to do any bit of designing… graphic, culinary, photography, layout, architectural, interior, etc… stop by and check it out.
Oh and the color swatch in this post was generated for a wedding announcement. I sent this and another set to the clients so I could get a better idea of what their colors are since Ivory, Yellow, and Red are so subjective. I plan on using this method a lot more in the future.
